What we have done in the past . . .
The Garden Rhapsodies Tour was an annual event organized and sponsored by the Thurston County Public Health Department (TCPHD) to showcase Common Sense Gardening and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. This project was a collaborative effort between TCPHD and the Master Gardener Foundation of Thurston County, the Native Plant Salvage Project, the Olympia Symphony Guild and the City of Olympia. Each partner contributed funding and/or volunteer hours to support the event. Because of local funding deficits, the tour will no longer be found with this branding.
The tour featured approximately six local gardens that practiced IPM. The attractive landscapes proved that it is possible to have a beautiful garden without using toxic pesticides. The tour also gave an opportunity for residents who already use IPM to strengthen their commitment, share information and network with each other. The gardens featured demonstrations of common sense gardening techniques, such as composting and flame weeding, along with live music and artists. Master Gardener volunteers were available in each garden to answer questions. Take-home information was provided through the Common Sense Gardening guides, as well as other educational resources.
